Folium Partners was founded in 2009 on the simple belief that all the good ideas are not yet ‘taken’. We initially made a name for ourselves as developers of the first expanded audiobook app framework to rock the industry, Folium enhancedAudio™. (Hello there, Audible!) Since then, we've gone on to expand upon that success and create other software frameworks.
We are still a small company, living simply, but feeling like rock stars. You won't find cedar-planked salmon or roasted beet salad with shaved fennel and parmesan on our company cafeteria menu, because our cafeteria is whichever of the many local restaurants you choose to try. (We're partial to the Food Co-op, which happens to be 68 steps from our back door, and Lela's, which sits just downstairs from us.) And besides, most of us bring our lunches to work and sit out back thinking up new feature ideas.
Perhaps our 401K isn't in place, and we're not ready to make t-shirts in celebration of each new product we release, but you'll instantly recognize that we're a tight team of bright people who enjoy creating cool things that other people get to use. We also happen to think that we have a shot at changing how things are done out there in the online world.
Now that our to-do and idea lists are overflowing, it's making us think maybe now is the right time to invite a few more smart people to the party, giving you a chance to make something of the opportunities you'll find around here. We're not selfish, so sharing our success comes naturally.
Compensation is based on all the usual things, but we also let you trade in some of your compensation chits for future royalties based on app sales. The decision is entirely yours to make.
Will you be working here ten years from now? Maybe, maybe not. But if we're not around, it won't be because we didn't try harder than the next guy. It will be because we're too busy having fun scuba diving off Aruba, volleyball in Baja, or exploring the regional differences of Thai cuisine!
So browse through our posted needs, see where you might fit, send us an introduction that will really make us want to have a chat with you. If you want us to know that you're extra creative, make it clear. Bringing something unusual perspective to the team? Show it. And then let's see what happens next
As we expand our platform coverage and various frameworks, you can play a major role in defining the capabilities and bringing things to life. Below, you'll find Folium Partners job listings for engineers and developers.
We are rapidly expanding our pool of target devices and are in search of talented software developers who are able to work on one or more of these platforms in their native development environments (where applicable):
- Apple iPhone / iPad (iOS 4)
- Blackberry
- Android
We are particular keen on expanding our skill sets where geo-anything and built-in functions (e.g., the built-in camera, accelerometer, contact lists, alarms) are concerned. Please feel free to brag about what you can tell about a device and what you can make it do. We've come up with a list of bonus benefits, based on certain needs:
- Deep experience with apps handling database requests will get you a week's worth of morning coffee or tea delivered to your desk.
- Additional experience with networking functions will get you that plus pastries from our local French baker.
- If you've successfully created apps that support any form of in-app purchasing, credit card transaction handling, or related e-commerce, your choice of Folium Partners Limited Edition t-shirt will await your start-date.
- And if you're willing to expose your savviness at building social networking functions, well, let's just say that dinner may be on us and it won't be at McDonalds. (Unless that's what you really, really want.)
In all cases it is expected that you'll be conversant about HTML 5, CSS 3, webkit and mozilla extensions, web apps vs. native apps, as well as passionate about the opportunities for mobile apps paired with standard web fare.
Life waits for no app, and we tend to keep our projects between 8-16 weeks, from Marketing Requirements Documentation to launch. Be there, or b-squared.
Options for Offsite
We recognize the slight possibility that you may not yet have discovered your desire to live in the beautiful Rogue Valley, nestled in nature among the mountains of southern Oregon. If that's the case, and if we all get along, there's a chance that we could still work together. It takes a special person to feel comfortable and confident working off-site for extended periods, and we will hold you to deadlines and communication as much as someone in the office. Still, we're open to the discussion.

Actionscripter / AIR / Flash Developer
No, Steve Jobs, Flash isn't dead. Not yet. In fact, Folium Partners has need of a skilled CS5 Actionscripter who is interested in applying those skills to bits and pieces of Android app development as well as online app counterparts using Adobe AIR and Flash in a browser.
You don't need to be an artist (someone else will do the design), but you do need to be wizzy with MySQL database connections, exchanging data between Flash and javascript, and have a solid background in OOP development and the MVC approach to it.
You'll really impress us when you show us your projects, no doubt, so please be prepared to do a little show-n-tell. "It's not live right now" isn't a phrase we want to hear, unless you're talking about lunch.

You may not have a degree in software engineering, but we love ya anyway. We need to beef up our team of people capable of building web apps for the Apple iPhone and iPad, based on one of a number of dev frameworks we use around here. When you talk with us about a position, be sure to talk about your favorite and least favorite frameworks, and the reasons why you like or dislike them.
We expect that you are a total HTML 4 & 5 magician, smart with your complex CSS 3 stylings, completely at ease with webkit extensions (no mozilla needed for this work), and an absolute wizard with javascript and PHP. You should be comfortable working with others who will complete work on the databases your apps require, the designers who create the look-and-feel elements, and feedback from the clients. (Some of them can be very particular about their apps and interactivity, because their brands are known throughout the nation, if not the world.)
So what if you're starting out in this app world and you're not absolutely perfectly? Let's talk. These positions can be really great for the right person who is truly interested in learning, self-driven, and diligent about finding answers without too much direct assistance. Reading, research, and experimentation can be your best friends.
This group leads a fast-paced life, and you should enjoy projects that last between 1-8 weeks.

Product Design & Management
Every good product needs someone to care for it. In our case, that includes someone to champion the user experience while someone else is champion of the product lifecycle. Read below to learn more.
We are ousting our COO and replacing him with project managers. Okay, not quite "ousting", but certainly letting him get on with his real job.
As a Folium Partners project manager, you'll be responsible for the workflow of a given team as well as have input and assorted responsibilities for new product and service development that affects your group.
You should have the most excellent communication skills we've ever experienced, truly enjoy working with small teams of people as well as marketeers and business staff, have a vision for achieving perfection, show tolerance when mistakes are made but a deep-rooted passion for correcting them, and possess the ability to juggle multiple projects each and every day of your work week. You should also be capable of working with HTML, proofreading pages of content, and making calendars.
If you do not have patience for change but are interested in Folium Partners, let's help you look at a different position. This particular job requires that you remain driven and caring, yet flexible.
Please be prepared to talk about your larger and smaller projects, what went wrong as well as what went right, various things you've learned through time spent managing projects and people, and the things that really bend your windshield wipers out of shape when it comes to work environments.

User Experience Designers
Some of our projects will make for perfect grad school projects. Others require a bit more experience and finesse. We have both types of opportunities open, and hope to convert our interns into full-time employees as often as possible. (We do have some experience with this, already.)
UI and UE development are different than graphic design. But you know that already. These require a different set of skills and knowledge areas than web design. But you already know that, too. And though we love and appreciate great graphic design, this job is all about the multitude of connections between what the user sees and what the user does. It's about our goals and the user POV.
Who’s responsible for the end user interface definition? You are. From concept through to design, always with a goal to offer the most compelling and engaging user experience possible, this is your baby. You should be familiar with exploring and explaining task groupings, usage modes, device peculiarities, how to define target audience needs, working with product managers, and all the other bits and pieces of creating complete and compelling experiences.
Working closely with the product and engineering folks, you will take high level specifications and create prototypes, storyboards, wireframes and mock-ups. Central to this will be to ensure your designs adhere to UI and technical guidelines of the various mobile platforms as well as our partners' branding guidelines. You will set the design tone in terms of typography, interactive behaviors, navigation, and color.
This all requires hands-on work. No doubt you are already an expert in design tools such as Photoshop, Illustrator, OmniGraffle and Flash. You've probably already downloaded some of those iPhone and iPad UI construction kits. You will need to keep in touch with technical, device and platform trends, be passionate about user experience and be highly technical.

Many of our projects require content—vast amounts of content—be gathered together, filtered, sorted, massaged, manipulated, and sometimes pounded into shape before it can be used inside its target app.
Do people label you as “picky”? Do you know the difference between “who” and “whom”? Our content managers are some of the most important people in our world. They pull together everything that's required for a given project, from images to text, video to audio, timelines to suggested reading lists, and create apps out of chaos.
All that's really needed is an understanding of HTML and CSS and a sharp mind. Everything else is on-the-job training.

Though we have developed a number of frameworks for various industries and uses, we're always on the lookout for the next best opportunity. As a Folium Partners' product marketeer, it will become your job to find and define those opportunities.
You should be comfortable not only with dreaming up cool features, but also constructing basic marketing requirements documentation. You'll want to be able to manage input from a variety of people, but also filter and sort it, making best use of the requests and ideas. We also want you to be able to identify the size of each opportunity, the cost of development, and ideas for post-release marketing. If third party relationships are required to bring an idea to fruition, you will work with the business development team to identify the potential partners and do the math on the upside potential.
You will work with project managers to see your features and functions brought to life, and will have product-line responsibility for matching target market wants and needs with our development schedules.
When we chat, please be prepared to discuss communication between marketing-speak and engineering-think, about products you've shepherded, as well as thoughts on the mobile app market in general and any niche in that market that you've identified as being underserved or poorly served. Also be prepared to talk about statistics and how they might apply to your job here.
