The Folium enhancedAudio™ framework powers the world’s first custom audiobook app experience. The player provides an elegant and intuitive interface for users to enjoy audiobooks without the difficulty of cumbersome controls or incompatible file types. Add supplemental content and image galleries for a product that surpasses the traditional audiobook, or create a connected, interactive, and one-of-a-kind experience with elements such as games, quizzes, and links to other content and media on the Web.

Since the introduction of books-on-tape, space for additional information on audiobooks has always been at a premium. Text and images on the cases and liner notes of cassette tapes and CDs are limited by physical size and printing costs, and current file formats such as MP3 and M4B are extremely limited in their abilities to provide additional content. These restrictions hardly allow for much more than an extremely simple plot summary, short author biography, and a few one-line review quotes.

With the Folium enhancedAudio framework, there’s no need to be limited by the requirements of a physical product or limitations of a file format. Publishers can include a wealth of supplementary content such as images, detailed author information, or even the full text of the book. Part of the incredible value of our apps lies in the ability to deliver content of this quality, free of the cost and space restrictions of other formats. The limits are now yours alone to set.

Supplemental Content

Supplemental content gives new depth to the traditional audiobook, similar to the wealth of extra content frequently found on DVDs. Author interviews, bibliographies or suggested reading, and previews of other or upcoming titles are just some of the possibilities. No longer are your quotes and author information limited to what will fit on the back of a CD case or in the liner notes.

Image Gallery

Create a gallery of images to accompany the audiobook—from illustrations to author photos to alternate book cover designs. You can even create a slideshow to run in the background of the player that can change images after certain intervals, or to coincide with the changing of chapters and sections.

Connection

The unique enhancedAudio framework takes the audiobook experience to a stunning new level of interactive connectivity. Games test your knowledge of the book and let you compete for score with other readers from around the world. Social media integration lets you tell friends on your Facebook page or Twitter feed what you’re reading now, and you can even send suggestions to friends on books you think they would enjoy.

Database And Content Management

App content management is powered by the Folium Partners Catalog, our flexible in-house database system. We can configure a database allowing you to add app content such as author information and photos to the production process yourself, or you can rely on the expertise of our content managers to handle content formatting and insertion.
Our content management team also has the ability to research and format supplementary content such as quotations, author interviews, images or illustrations, and cover art—content that every publisher may not have the time or resources to collect.

Audio Processing

The compression offered by digital audio formats allows for the storage of large amounts of audio data in smaller file sizes at no perceptible loss of quality. If you’ve been distributing your audiobook recordings in MP3 format, the files may already be optimized for maximum quality and minimum size for your apps. If you’ve never distributed your recordings digitally, don’t worry. Our audio processing service can convert any kind of recordings to the formats most suitable for app production. Since our apps aren’t limited by physical concerns such as the amount of space on an audio CD, we are also able to process your recordings so the app plays out with the chapter and section divisions the author intended, without any arbitrary breaks or interruptions due to space restrictions.

App Submission and Uploading

One of the steps to selling audiobooks apps through the Apple® App Store℠ is the process of submission and approval through the iTunes® Connect service using an Apple developer account. You can opt to apply for your own developer account for the ability to access your app information or make changes at any time you wish. Folium Partners will build the audiobook app, then transfer the binary to you for uploading and approval. Or, if you’d like, we can manage the entire submission process under our own developer account. You’ll still have complete control over every aspect of the pricing and sale decisions.
